Gentamicin as a bactericidal agent in virological tissue cultures.
نویسنده
چکیده
For use in virological tissue culture work, gentamicin is more convenient than penicillin + streptomycin. It is bactericidal for a wider range of organisms, may be used at only half the concentration needed for penicillin and streptomycin, does not apparently interfere with growth of tissue cultures and viruses, remains active at 37 degrees C., and, most remarkable of all, it is stable at autoclave temperatures and so can be put into media before sterilization, thus lessening the number of additions to the sterilized medium. Gentamicin is now in routine use in this laboratory.

Influence of extracellular bactericidal agents on bacteria within macrophages.
We employed gentamicin-sensitive and -resistant derivatives of Escherichia coli in a macrophage phagocytosis assay that compared lambda bacteriophage and gentamicin as extracellular bactericidal agents. Colony counts and direct microscopic examination of phagocytized E. coli supported the conclusion that gentamicin entered macrophages, even at low concentrations, and contributed to their bacter...
متن کاملBactericidal activity of antibiotics against Legionella micdadei (Pittsburgh pneumonia agent).
The bactericidal activity of five antibiotics for Legionella micdadei was determined by the construction of time-kill curves. Erythromycin, rifampin, penicillin G, cephalothin, and gentamicin were bactericidal for L. micdadei at readily achievable concentrations. The minimal bactericidal concentrations, defined as those producing 99.9% killing within 24 h, were: erythromycin, 4.6; rifampin, 0.1...
متن کاملClinical Pharmacokinetics of Gentamicin in Neonates
Gentamicin is a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic, it inhibits the protein synthesis. Gentamicin is active against the majority of aerobic gram-negative bacilli such as Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Escherichia coli. The gentamicin doses are 3 mg/kg once-daily for preterm newborns < 35 weeks of gestation and 4 mg/kg once-daily for newborns > 35 weeks of gestation. The monitoring of gentamici...
متن کاملIn-vitro evaluation of antibacterial potential of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives for intraoral wound closure
Background: Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives have been used as a substitute to silk for intraoral wound closure. Placement of sutures provides a corridor for accumulation of microorganisms into tissue which leads to infection. Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives exhibit many properties of an ideal wound closure agent, minimizing the problems generated by suturing thread. The antimicrobial properties of...
متن کاملSemiautomated determination of minimum bactericidal concentrations of antibiotics.
Using a newly devised 50-channel photometer which records the opacity of growing bacterial cultures, it was shown that the time taken by cultures diluted 1/1000 in fresh broth to reach 50% of the opacity of a fully grown culture was inversely related to the concentration of organisms in the original culture. This relation was used to determine the numbers of survivors after exposure to benzylpe...
